I would say the USA is on a different level when it comes to materialism. I don't know any other nation where people are so obsessed with keeping up with the Joneses, where people will flat out ask you what your job is and how much you earn and judge you based on your material wealth and possessions.

Example: when I was last in Paris, there seemed to be more Americans than French people in the Luis Vuitton shop on the Champs-Élysées. Americans seem to care more about labels even more than British people who are quite bad in that respect.

I would say East Asia is every bit as materialistic as the US. I would add Russia, Australia and Italy to the list of very materialistic countries. Some parts of Europe seem a bit less, they're more into culture etc than just wanting stuff. Canada is probably a little bit less than the US but up there.

No, it isn't. I have never heard those words (tall poppy syndrome) uttered in real life before, by anyone, nor on the news, or any TV show. I didn't even know such a thing existed until I saw it mentioned on this forum.

Italy has been mentioned already as the most materialistic country, more than once I believe.

But is materialism a bad thing? So what if people want to look nice? Everyone wants nice things, right?
