Why is Sunday a regular work day in Israel, which suppose to be a modern, westernized nation?
In the western world, Saturday and Sunday are weekends (Non-retailers being closed).
There are Christians who live in Israel and must work on Sundays, because they are expected to.
It's basically the same as having weekend on Sunday and Monday, so American Jews have to work on their "Sabbath" Saturday.
probably because the Christians in Israel aren't the majority. it's just tough, that's how it goes.
I agree, since they have some modern companies, and are a more modern country than most of the surrounding area, perhaps they should do a Sat/Sun weekend. but it's not up to me..
Its a Jewish country that basically follows the Bible. Six days work and one day or rest. Most take off Friday (or most of it) as part of their weekend. But from Friday sundown to an hour past sundown on Saturday, everything is closed (stores, public transportation, businesses). But keep in mind they work a 43 hour workweek so there are also a couple required half days during the week to allow for family time. If you pull up a Jewish calendar most of their holidays are Bible connected (about 4-5 are not). To them Saturday is truly an off day as no one can be forced in anyway to work it (including non-Jews).
But if you are trying to compare it to the US, The US was a 7 day work week until the 1870's. It wasn't until industrialization did Sunday become a fixed rest day and Saturday became the other one due to the amount of Torah following Jews in relation to that workforce (not of the country) in those days.
I doubt the five-day week had anything to do with the persence of Jews. The five-day week was an old reivindication by workers movements internationally.

Interesting, I did not know that. Since Israel is not Muslim, I would expect it to follow the rest of the world, Christian or not, which have Saturday and Sunday off.

That's not the rest of the world, only some Christian countries. In Chile and India, for example, I know that people work on Saturday and only Sunday is the day off. China only started 5 day weeks in 1995. It makes sense for Israel to have a Saturday and maybe friday off as a huge number of Israelis are Muslim and only a tiny minority are Christian, a much smaller number than the Muslims and Druze who have their holy day on Friday.
I wish it was a regular day here. I hate Sundays, they are so boring and you can never go anywhere because all of the shops close.
