In 1923 HODA SHARAAWI Hanem, the daughter of SHAARAWI PASHA a rich Muslim landowner and prime minister, was returning from Paris with a delegation of 12 women where they attended an international conference. They were met at the Bab El-Hadid Railway Station by reporters from all the local Arabic, English, French, and Greek newspapers.

SHARAAWI Hanem, in a gesture of defiance, removed the veil that covered her hair only; her companions quickly joined her and removed theirs.

And now, ninety years later, I am depressed to see the daughters of the oldest civilization emulating the daughters of the bedouins of the Arabian Gulf and wearing nikabs.

Is there Saudi gold that is affecting our civilization, our way of life, our culture of tolerance?

It doesn't matter what the daughter of "Shaarawi Pasha" is allowed to do; what truly defines the society, is what the peasant women in some village is allowed to get away with.
And no, I don't believe it's "Saudi gold" that affects your civilization - it's Islam in this respect.

Default Egypt

The peasants in the villages of Egypt, including the Saiide, have never worn nikabs.

And what about the majority of female students at Cairo University wearing veils?
