Very barren, beautiful in a savage sort of way, the wind is like nothing most people will have experienced ( it can almost feel like your face is being sandblasted).
When I was there it was cold but not horribly so ( apart from said winds)and there was a mixture of fierce rain but also some amazing sunshine which I had not expected. I taught English for a year at a university in Guayaquil, Ecuador. At the end of the year before I left Ecuador I visited the Galapagos Islands. My trip was arranged by a local Ecuadorian travel agency with the help of an Ecuadorian friend.
The San Blas Islands on the Caribbean side of Panama and Pinas Bay, Panama right near the Colombian border on the Pacific side. Also the uninhabited islands in the southern portion of the Bahamas. Crossing the Caribbean on a 60' boat can make you feel out in the middle of nowhere as well.

Another fun fact, the Galapagos penguin occasionally ventures north of the equator.
