I still think white Americans have more in common appearance-wise with continental Europeans than British.

I realise this is really a bad stereotype.
please forgive me readers but friend this is what i see when i look out my door.

If you cant tell the difference between white Brits and white Americans, obviously a) havent spent time in both regions and/ or b) not observant to physical details

There's a great difference in looks between white Brits and white Americans. And it aint just the teeth, body frame or dressing.

Also in regards to the OP, of course the designation "American" will include those of many many colors, but in regards to white Americans- there CAN be an "American look" (white ppl)..it is hard to describe until one goes to other western or anglo-phone countries and notices the differences. Again, those who do not notice are simply not sharp-eyed in the details.

The other things are the things that set them apart. I.e. They have a giant camera hanging around their necks with a backpack on walking around. If they don't have something like that, it's impossible to tell.

If you really think about it...if even your grandparents came to the US from China, 2 generations is not enough to all of a sudden make you look like a white American. People do tend to marry people within their own "race" too, so this type of thing..your look won't change. You're still going to look "foreign." It would take a little bit before you start to look what people think of as white American.

Point is that a lot of Americans could pass as "foreign" and people who think there's a stereotypical American look haven't spent enough time here. There's people of all sorts of ethnicities here who are American. Even if we were talking about overall dress and what not, there's that too. There's people here that dress of all different styles.
Here are three girls I know of Chinese descent.

One was born in China. One was born in the US. One was born in Africa of all places. Can you tell which one was born where?

And, here are some male relatives of mine. One was born in the US. One was born in Sweden. One was born in the UK. Can you tell which one was born where?

Being a non-American, most Americans I've encountered were tourists overseas who are fat, often old balding white dudes and are obnoxious as hell.

I'm aware that not all Americans are like that, and Americans can come in all sorts of races and different types.

Physical looks aside; many Americans simply do not fit the stereotype and do not get noticed, while many Americans do fit the stereotype and get noticed.

Manner of dress is the best way to tell an American; Americans like wearing baggy jeans, even women, baggy relative to Europeans and the rest of the world really. Also shorts, Americans like wearing shorts when it is hot, and many like the baggy ones with large baggy pockets. Some countries hardly anyone wears shorts unless it is a beach town. Shoes as well can stand out. Another I find from my experience is that many Americans like wearing 1 - 3 under shirts, like they will wear a wife beater, a white t-shirt, then some collared shirt.

How an American act would be another way to tell, though a but more difficult to tell and this automatically gives away the nationality when they speak (they could be Canadians of course, but many Canadians seem to like hanging a little Canadian flag off of them everywhere they go). But while the non-stereotype slips under the radar and does not get noticed, the stereotype fits in well; loud, seem to want to let everyone know they are on vacation and an American, etc.

I live in Miami and can tell the tourists right away, so the stereotypes are not just for Americans, but fun to talk about.
