There are many places in Malaysia and Indonesia that are much more safe than big American cities.

However I can state that the problem with islamic countries is not Islam, or the muslims, but the fact that my culture is very different and I'm afraid of taking some attitude which can be perceived as offensive by nationals of these countries.
I'm not angry with you - as I said, I feel sorry for you. Of course everyone will be more interested in some places than others, but you said you have no interest in visiting any Islamic country except Turkey - quite different and really sad IMO. Someone else said in another thread that he has no interest in ever visiting Latin America - I pity that person just as much as I pity you.

I think first you have to know very clear how that country is to decide if you like or not to visit it.

Islamic countries are very different and the culture of many of them very ancient. The Near Orient countries are not only islam but much more: the first human civilisations flourished in Iraq, Egypt, Turkey, Syria. Not to speak about natural landscapes.

You can go to jail for kissing in the UAE, considered one of the better islamic countries for westerners to visits. I think that tells you all you need to know.

Interesting and unfortunate. However, the reputation of the UAE as a good place for western visitors is based on its wealth, not its liberal values, and of you're extrapolating from one news story about Dubai what the whole Muslim world must be like, you really need to educate yourself.

I've never really had much in interest in Dubai--it seems like it's sort of Las Vegas without the casinos and booze. Which is rather pointless. Even Abu Dhabi sounds more interesting.

I'd take Marrakesh, Istanbul, Sarajevo, Yogyakarta, Zanzibar, or Kuala Lumpur over Dubai or anywhere in the Gulf for a trip. The one place in the Gulf that sort of sounds more enticing is Oman.

People seem to be just thinking of Muslim countries as being the core of the Middle East.

In my opinion, Yemen, although the most unknown, is the most interesting Muslim country. I never visited and didn't know this untill recently, when I saw a collection of photos of it.

Is a country of mountains with incredible landscapes and very ancient cities and villages perched on rocks. A sort of Middle-East Italy, almost without modern architecture.

Because of isolation, everything is archaic and stuck in time, the athmosphere, people living according to ancient customs.

In my opinion, is the real country of 1001 Nights and is is incredible how such gems like Yemen in ME or Romania in Europe remain uknown, only because people assume they know everything and don't search further.
