I'm not going to include cities I've already been to, so in random order:

Paris
Mexico DF
Venice
Florence
Buenos Aires
Barcelona
Istanbul
Rio De Janeiro
Cairo
London

There are many more, but these are probably my top-10. Honourable mention goes to Fez, Cuzco, Antigua, Cartagena, and Lahore.

Edinburgh is an amazing city just because it hasn't got a population of millions it shouldn't automatically be ruled out. I picked Split thats only got a population of 200,000.

Just because it's an important city doesn't mean it's as interesting or historically moving to visit.
Frankly, every time I visit, I just get a giant headache and a gut full of regret.
I think I'd put L.A./Hollywood over NYC.
I'd also put Venice over Rome or Florence.
I'd put New Delhi over Istanbul.
This. I live in NYC. Don't get me wrong: it is great, but every European city I have been to has blown me away. NYC is a bit overrated and not that clean. Also, the architecture isn't that great (it is not a beautiful city), but there's lots to do which makes it an enjoyable place. I am never bored in NYC I will say that, but aestethtically, other cities are much more pleasing.

But different cities, large or small, have their pros and cons. Edinburgh is an ancient city with amazing old streets, buildings etc and has one of the best museums in Europe outside London and Paris, brilliant restaurants, shopping and great nightlife.

What it comes down to is preferences- different strokes for different strokes. I put Moscow as #1 on my list b/c that's where my family came over to the US from in the early 1900's so to me, it is sentimental. Probably most people would not put Moscow as #1.

My husband went to Edinburgh. He thought it was pretty but he hated the food.
