Both beautiful cities with prominent gay scenes. I haven't been to SF but would like to. Both are blessed with a pretty hip urban culture, setting, close to nature...both have a lot of pretentious yuppies, I'm guessing, and drug scenes.

I'd go with SF. Sydney seems nice though.

Never been to Sydney, live across the bay from SF and been there more times than I can count:

Cleanliness: SF can be dirty in places and often smells bad. Haven't heard this about Sydney.

Friendly people: Australians seem friendlier overall. The few I've met were from the Sydney area too.

Attractive people: This is subjective and hard to define

Atmosphere: Can't comment on Sydney

Open mindness: Both seem about equal in this regard maybe.

Transport: Can't comment on Sydney

Multicultural: Probably just about Equal although the make up is likely different.

Elegancy: Equal

Party: Sydney

Culture (museums etc): Perhaps equal

Cuisine: San Francisco

Scenery: Equal

History: San Francisco

Shopping:???

Weather: Subjective but personally I prefer SF's cooler weather

Safety:???

Affordability:Well I know SF is a joke in this area

Reputation: Meaning what?

Hotels:???

Architecture: San Francisco maybe?

Movies: Meaning?

Based off what you know, where would you live IYO? If I had to pick one to live, it would be SF. The cooler weather alone is enough to get me to live there.

I dont know. This is a difficult question. I have always wanted to visit San Francisco. For me SF is a symbol of hippies, freedom, tolerance, equality. I know that in reality it might be a completely different place but I still think that it must be a great city to visit/live. When you say SF I immediately imagine Kelly Jones from band Stereophonics sitting on a ship and singing "San Francisco Bay past pier thirty nine.." and it always makes me want to travel there. I just want to sit on a hill above Golden Gate Bridge and have a good time looking at the scenery. I want to talk to locals about politics/life because from what I know SF or California in general are considered to be progressive. I wish I could travel there someday but Im worried if I do it will ruin my ideas of this city...
On the other hand Sydney is in Australia - in a country of surfers, hot weather and wild nature. I know that you can find these things in the USA or in other countries too but for some reasons the country seems to be a great place to live. As I said before your question is difficult to answer. If I had to choose I would vote for San Francisco.

I would pick Sydney due to a bit warmer and better beaches. SF gets more sun and half the rain. Cost wise acoording to a cost of living site I like, Sydney is 13% more expensive and incomes area bout the same.

However, I would pick nearby San Jose over Sydney.
