Seriously, rule out Auckland. It's even more isolated globally if you like to travel. I'd pick Melbourne. Great food, tolerant and multicultural overall, nice architecture, walkable, gardens, good public transport, culture, entertainment.etc.

I'd take Auckland, but that's probably my NZ bias. Great beaches, great bush, great food etc.

Sydney and Melbourne are both cool, but I'd choose Melbourne as a city and Sydney for climate, outdoors etc
