I meet you and treat you with respect, I'm insincere?
I meet you and act like a jerk, I'm sincere?
I don't get it.
To me, being polite is being respectful of others. Since when is that bad? If somebody gives me a reason to be impolite, I will. Otherwise, I'm polite. Why am I being insincere??? Maybe we just have different definitions of polite. To me, polite doesn't mean getting all gushy and friendly. It just means not being a jerk or cold-shouldered--like, I don't know, business demeanor or something. I can't see how that's a bad thing.
I have to agree it is the Japanese. A lot of Canadians I've met are also very polite. Lastly, a lot of people in Chicago and Seattle are polite if reserved.
Well never been to Japan but I never met a Japanese I never did dislike and they were all really polite.
I found Malaysians very polite as well and even though its very multiracial no matter what race they are they are really polite, from my experience in that country. I even found the Chinese people living there more friendly than the Chinese people living in my country or Singapore.

I concur with your statement about Malaysia. I have lived here for 14 years and this is considered a "polite culture". But politeness does NOT equate with friendliness. Nor does it indicate anything other than surficial respect. It is a way of getting along on the surface, since perceptions are more important than reality. Scratch the surface, you find something else.
Americans are VERY polite in my experience NOT that I've interacted with more than a miniscule percentage of the population. But in terms of getting about in a country I found the politeness very noticeable.

I am aware of that, even people that appear friendly may not necessary want to be your friend, but I am aware politeness is part of Malaysian culture.
I checked thru Immigration in DFW (I was only on transit)

Yeah but that's Texas. We're known for being very friendly and polite at least in the States.
