Being meek/shy or quiet isn't being polite (just in case you have those mixed up)

For me, the most polite people I've ever experienced are the Turks, followed closely by the Swiss and the Japanese.
Turks are not polite, they harass every foreign girl they see

The Japanese are so polite it can be a bit off setting for an American (IMO). For example, when you enter a room with a superior, you can say "Ojama shimasu" which basically translates to "I am going to bother you" and is somewhat apologetic. Such phrases (there are tons of them) can be a bit difficult to wrap your mind around. Also, the Japanese are very conscious about their behavior in public- I have seen people walk out of a room to sneeze. Also, when I worked there, everyone would say such good things about the GM; it was practically hearsay to speak badly about him. Likewise, when I spoke Japanese (and there were times when no one knew what I was trying to get at!) everyone would tell me how wonderful my language skills were. Thank goodness I lived with little kids who would set me straight!

Japanese are the most polite people in the world. I've reached this conclusion after a trip to Japan, so it's personal experience I guess.

I would also say the Swiss people, but they seemed more reserved and close.

I'm sure I'm going to get blasted for this but I'm giving my honest opinion; Americans.

Oh yeah, Japanese as well, although my friend who taught over there got caught up with the Yakuza(sp?) and they weren't friendly at all.

Most people of Kleve are polite! And of Millingen aan de Rijn, Bimmen and Kranenburg. I have my doubts about Malden tough.

It's true they are rather cheesy with foreign girls. The same cane be said of neighbouring Mediterranean and Near Eastern populations.

It's worse for blondish, north European looking, women. My mother was in Turkey around 30 years ago. She was a rather beautiful young woman back then. She could literally (when walking on her own with my father) not cross the street without being harassed by young and old men alike.

Some women may find it flattering. I would think it's mostly annoying. I don't know if it has improved since then. My ex-girlfriend was in Bodrum a few years ago. She told me similar stories.

I've heard many stories about the double standards Turkish families have towards how their boys and girls are allowed to behave. I have also seen Turkish guys who try to control their sisters. Once I went out with my cousin and a Turkish guy and his sister. He was holding his sister's hair and made sure she wouldn't look at us. It was sad and funny at the same time.

Turkish guys are allowed to have foreign girlfriends. The girls are not. Eastern Turkey is even more patriarchal.

The more modern western-style Turkish celebrities on their satellite TV channels aren't representative of the country as a whole.

People in the southeastern portion of the United States are the friendliest in the world, by a long shot.
