having been all over and
living in Beijing for over a year...
Southeast Asia...
India, Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, not so much vietnam or China
Cambodia being the friendliest of them all...I had never been treated so well. In Bangkok, Thailand you will get scammed but the Islands such as Ko Samui are super friendly...fell off of my motorcycle and a thai girl with a stand on the beach patched me up everyday and she and her friends took us out most nights during our stay.
(No they weren't prostitutes haha)

Polite is not always a good thing. For example the famous hospitality of the American south is very shallow. It is a superficial "yall come back" hiding a core of distrust and contempt.
The Burmese are the most charming, inoffensive, gentle, warm-hearted people I have ever met, and everyone I know who has been to Mynamar says the same thing about them.
In China, Beijing might be one thing, but the rest of outback China, as well as Taiwan and Hong Kong, the people are extremely accommodating and patiently helpful.
The Iranians are nice almost to a fault. They fall over themselves to be nice to each other and to strangers, and it is genuine. They laugh easily and are not boisterous or loud.

It comes from ritual politeness - "taarof". It can be compared to the European standards of politness that were adopted from the court etiquette of the Byzantine empire.

Most Asians hide their feelings so they won't not discomfort anyone they talk to.

I would say it's mostly true for East Asians, as I've got plenty of experience with Chinese, Japanese and Korean people who do hide their feelings to strangers. I once saw a Chinese girl get slapped by her ex-boyfriend in a university environment. I asked if she needs help. She denied the whole thing. Another time in a meeting with staff two Chinese students were obviously arguing, yet lied and told us everything is fine. They want to give a good impression as a collective to foreigners. But it's quite easy to know what's actually going on.

From my experience: Turkey, Syria - polite in the cities, very friendly in villages
The inner- society problems is another issue, we shouldn´t mix all together

In japan our entire culture is based off of politeness and respect. The only other people i know who are near as polite in a japanese sense would be koreans. For westerners i think canadians are pretty polite.
