Have people heard of the NFL, NBA and MLB?
Are they shown on tv?
Which teams have you heard of?
Have you ever heard of... Tom Brady, Adrian Peterson, Alex Rodriguez, Albert Pujols, Josh Hamilton, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant?
The NFL and MLB are basically non-existant here. American Basketball is (was?) a tad more popular, especially during the time of Michael Jordan and the Dream Team. Personally, I don't know the exact rules of any of these sports. Baseball and football are the most "exotic" ones for me, though.
I guess the NHL is the most popular here, with a handful of Austrian players actually playing there. It's only shown on a rather small TV station, though.
I don't really know any of those players besides LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. And that's only because of some American webpages I regularly follow up on.
Number 1 sports in Austria are still football (especially the Austrian, German and English league), alpine skiing, ski jumping, ice hockey and Formula 1. Sailing, biathlon, regular cross country skiing and cycling play a minor role during big events.
Well, I'm an American living in the UK so I can't really answer but I know my British husband is pretty knowledgeable about American sports teams. He is particularly into sports but the average Brit will have picked up a few team names through mentions in American TV shows. 'Friends', as an example off the top of my head, often mentioned the Knicks, Mets, etc.

LOL I'm American and I've only heard of a few of those names, but then, I'm not really into sports.
There's been more of a move lately to popularise the NFL in the UK.
The latest NFL street event in London was quite funny, and looked like it had tens of thousands attending.
I think it's interesting to get a sense of the opinions of those outside the US on the NFL and American football... It's really the most American of sports in some ways(since basketball and baseball are popular in a range of other countries to varying degrees, and hockey is really the sport of Canada). I find the marketing of American football to Europe to be an curious subject.
NFL, college, and high school football however are very much a US-centric sort of thing. Canadians have their own CFL and appreciate it, but it takes a back seat to hockey. In a lot of the US, football really reigns supreme--to the point where in some places even high school football is a major event covered heavily by the local media.
I remember seeing NFL games being broadcast at bars in foreign countries and watching who was actually paying attention to the games. I remember talking to some young guys in Chile watching an NFL broadcast at a bar and they said they thought it was sort of "cool and different" though they totally didn't understand everything about the game.
I only follow hockey and keep an eye on minor leagues too.
Baseball and football is about as fun as watching paint dry.
