The ongoing conflict with bombings and riots, and a VERY depressing feel overall plus the barricades, segregation and hopelessness. Altogether a miserable place.

The Boxer (1997) Movie Trailer, Review, Clips, Movie Times - YouTube

This movie has an extremely vivid sense of place and the story takes place in Belfast. yes this is a fictional movie but it is very realistic. It shows the level of hopelessness and the grimness of everyday life in Northern Ireland. Belfast is not as bad as Baghdad in my opinion but it is a very grim place.

Bogota/Medellin? That's two cities, and they are 8 hours apart by car.

Bogota is pretty ho-hum, but Medellin is an absolute jewel of a city. It's a beautiful city in a beautiful setting, the people are wonderful and friendly, there is a lovely laid-back lifestyle there. If I h ad to live in a big city, Medellin would certainly be on my short list.

Lagos gets a bad rap, and in many respects deserves it. But I actually liked Lagos, it is easy to find neighborhoods where the people were pleasant and easy going. It's not even crowded off the island.

I strongly suspect that one can, by accident, discover that all the cities on the list are very liveable/visitable, as much as as any cities that you wold put on your favorites list, since in each one millions of people do live, and seem to get along OK, and behave themselves in a civil fashion..

If I had to list the cities where I did not find much to redeem them, I'd say Cairo, Lusaka, Guatemala, Montevideo, Dhaka, Bucharest, Vientiane, Casablanca, Dubai..

The dmv is the worst h-hole on earth. All that waiting infuriates me, because they make you wait for like most of the day.

Dubai is apparently a very nice city despite being in the Persian Gulf. Now I would not live there, but it is better than the cities in neighboring countries.

I put Mogadishu cause its a complete anarchy there with a mix of tribes, clans, terrorist groups, and pirates all fighting one another. Somalia is often described as the Fourth World. In Baghdad at least you have some semblance of order despite the ongoing terrorism, and in Kabul at least you have the US military there offering some protection. Somalia is probably the worst hell on Earth. Belfast and Sarajevo are probably the worst cities in Europe. Tijuana and Juarez are the centers for the Mexican drug war.
