You need to understand that Americans have some kind of a love affair with their pillows - they keep on inventing and reinventing them ( mattresses too by the way ) I've seen gazillion of different types of pillows in the US, yet none was as comfortable as that squared feather pillow made in the USSR for all kind of occasions.))
(That's as far as I'm concerned )
And the reason why we need to have more pillows is because we're not SLEEPING UNDER A GIGANTIC ONE in a duvet cover, generally speaking. Of course you don't need ADDITIONAL pillows when you're sleeping with the equivalent of seventeen pillows on top of and all around you, like most Europeans.
I never understood the need to have more than one pillow myself.
And who puts pillows between their legs? lol
I don't use a pillow. I used part of my comforter just to separate the knees. Don't like when they clang together or rub together. Now those big monstrosities shown in that link are mostly what women here like to use. Not all women by any means but it's 99% women who use those.

Yeah given the fact most of them were pictures of women that wouldn't surprise me.
