Ok, so I'm a bit curious about what US States are most similar to single European countries, as there is a thread comparing US/Europe cities. Preferably, American countries can be included, even Asian countries as well. It can be either culturally, economically, linguistically or historically. For example:
UK - North Dakota - Brazil - Indonesia (I know these ones aren't similar, though this is the idea)
So go ahead and find similarities and equivalents.
Ok, looks like we're talking physical similarities.
Western Washington - Norway
Alaska - Much of Scandinavia
California - Spain and France
Gulf Coast states and Florida - Southeastern China
Eastern parts of Wyoming, Colorado and Montana and western parts of the Dakotas, Kansas and Nebraska - Russian steppes
Texas - South Africa (about the same distance from the equator with similar rainfall swings and temperature extremes)
It's hard for me to compare single US states in some cases. Arizona resembles the Sahara. Unless you're in northern AZ where it resembles the Pyrenees. California resembles Spain, France and Chile. Unless you're in the Sierras where it resembles Switzerland more.
California and Spain - areas with very hot summer summers, plentiful sunshine but also cooler summers along the immediate coastline. Some oceanic areas in the north that receive a lot of rain, and snowy mountainous areas.
New England states and parts of Ukraine, Poland and Russia - cold winters and warm-very warm summers.
Quebec/Newfoundland and Labrador and Norway/Sweden/Finland/Denmark (both regions have forests in the north and most of their population and cities in the south)
Texas/Oklahoma and Spain/Portugal (both have at least 3 large cities (Spain/Portugal-Madrid,Barcelona,Lisbon)(Texas/Oklahoma-Houston,San Antonio,Dallas/Fort Worth) and farms everywhere else and warm to hot most of the year as well as having a significant Spanish Speaking Population)
Florida and Western Malaysia (both have big tourist attractions all around both of the states and Miami and Singapore have large ports and miles of beaches and have large cultural diversity)
Northeastern US (13 states and DC) and Japan (both have a string of cities running throughout the coast (Portland to Virginia Beach of the Northeastern US and Utsunomiya to Kumamoto of Japan with Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington as centers of the Northeastern US and Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka as centers of Japan)
Caribbean and Indonesia (both have lots of islands and lots of people from the US and Canada go to the Caribbean in the Winter, while lots of people from Russia, China, Mongolia, Japan and Korea go to Indonesia in the Winter.
