When I was in London I didn't really go out drinking.
But in Amsterdam there were many Brits, and none of them were the stiff upper lip, chip-chip cheerio stereotype that you see in the movies. They partied hardy.
They were no less drunk, loud and obnoxious than us Americans. (As a matter of fact, it was my experience that Americans tried to play down the obnoxious stereotype, while the Brits let it all hang out.)
I think it varies by the individual and as far as a culture goes, it's pretty close. Country and rap music are hugely popular in America and both have a party/fun/dancing mentality in that music and brit music is more reflective imo...the biggest difference is in the music we listen to.

American music feels more high and jam to me.. American movies tend to have more Wow factor..
Brit music and movies to me feels much more subdued, mild and mellow to my liking..
Compare Adele's Skyfall and Rolling to the deep to Lady Gaga's Born this Way or Britney Spears songs..
If you have a stereotype of brits as being all downton abbey and Americans some frat party. Brits party as hard as anyone, but it's not really a compliment. ..
