i'm not ashamed to be an american, but i don't feel the need to advertise it, either. The stereotype that australians have about americans is particularly galling given the effusive patriotism of the average aussie.
I like how you refuted one stereotype with another.
I think there are overly patriotic people to be found in any and every country.
It isn't a stereotype. It's conventional wisdom in Australia that Americans are over the top in terms of patriotism. As someone who has lived for years in Melbourne the hypocrisy of that belief is not lost on me. It's really bad here. It's like Australia is always in competition or something. Aussie winners of Olympic medals are listed without listing the actual winner of a competition. There isn't a story about Grammys or Oscars, but which Aussies won or were "snubbed".
News for ya ......... you are just another country to us.
The proliferation of media, technology, entertainment and exported foreign policy for well or ill make sure that the US isn't just another country to you. I think that the cultural invasion for which most of the people are willing consumers is the cause of a lot of anti-US sentiment.
not near as taboo as expressing it here. the shame game is not owned by foreign countries its owner is right here.
