Not too sure about other European countries.

Canada. Been insulted more times there than anywhere else. They do it very subtley like "such a shame you Americans don't travel much like we do, why is that?" they ask with a smarmy air of superiority.

The funny thing about Candadians is how well behaved they are in the US. You literally see loads of them up and down the East Coast in summer. Never a negative word about the US comes out of their mouth then.

Another one is Ireland. Irish can be particularly nasty about the US. I've had an Irish guy come up to me and tell me that Ireland built the US, and Americans were lazy (and this while I was in Dublin). I think what he meant was Irish immigrants helped build the US. I told him those Irish immigrants from 1860 or whenever were the ancestors of Americans today, so no it wasn't "Ireland" doing the building but Americans.

I found Spanish folks to be very polite and had a great time there. Same with the the Netherlands.

Could it be that "they" in the first paragraph is not the same "they" in the second paragraph?

Let me be clearer: you (one person) are wrong because you are assuming that 35 million people, a few of whom you've met in different contexts, can be generalized into a single "they".

I'm reponding to an OP in a thread about which "Western" country you believe is the most anti-American. I do believe it is Canada, as so much of their national identity is in being "not American". Not to mention how many United Empire Loyalists fled there after the War of Independence. Their feelings seeped down thru the generations.

Maybe "they" are two disparate groups. I don't really care.

To clarify I think Canada is more anti-American on a subtle personal kind of level as they interact with Americans in Canada.

I found Spanish and Dutch folks to be great to talk with and hang out. Canadians, not so much. When I saw them in Europe I avoided them like the plague with their little Maple Leaf flags sewed onto their coats. As soon as I see that I have no interest. It is the whole "I'm not American" thing that turns me off.

We all are.

People here always say that. And you should not base it on an experience thank you very much.

I've met several Canadians here in Melbourne, only one of whom wasn't playing to his being not American. Twice in the last few months I've been on playgrounds with my kids (who along with my wife and myself are dual citizens) where some silly Canadian bint was talking to my wife about the nasty Americans of which she wasn't one. I was embarrassed for her.

I'm staying at a backpackers here in the city (I'm moving into a place on Tuesday) and I overheard a girl with what I thought was an American accent saying, 'yeah we hate Americans etc', actually there are more Canadians here than Americans (independent travellers).
