This time is stabbing - not shooting...

I think there are just very many "nut cases" that are not diagnosed, due to many factors, one of them is a poor mental health care access.

The mental health-care system in the United States is a multibillion-dollar industry that is still not big enough to serve all those who need it. Costs are a big barrier to treatments -- but so are attitudes about mental health. New laws might change access to mental health, although significant barriers still remain. Here's a look at what we invest in the mental health-care system, what that buys us and where gaps in coverage remain:
Seven facts about America’s mental health-care system

In 2012, there were an estimated 43.7 million adults aged 18 or older in the U.S. with AMI (Any Mental Illness) in the past year. This represented 18.6 % of all U.S. adults.

Mental disorders are common among children in the United States, and can be particularly difficult for the children themselves and their caregivers. While mental disorders are widespread, the main burden of illness is concentrated among those suffering from a seriously debilitating mental illness. Just over 20% (or 1 in 5) children, either currently or at some point during their life, have had a seriously debilitating mental disorder.
21.4% of all 13-18 year old adolescents have severe disorder.

Obviously, more gun control is the answer to these mass stabbings.

^^^ That too! Prescribing a pill is easier and cheaper than one to one long term therapy.

^^ Is therapy even needed? Anymore, a child shows the slightest sign of independent thought, and society jams "pills" down their throat to keep them complacent.
