4 kids were shot in Chicago tonight. Who cares?
I get sad every time I hear about tragedies. I try to block it out because I don't want it to consume my life.

All tragedies are sad but they happen all over the world all the time.

In the part of the world where I live in the span of about 7 months recently we had a train derailment and explosion in the centre of a small town that killed 52 people (Lac-Mégantic) and a seniors' residence fire that killed 32 people (L'Isle-Verte).

These have had a huge impact when you consider we are basically a ''society'' of only 8 million people.

Not a big fan of the callousness hiding behind these matter-of-fact, supposedly cool and rational statements..."tragedies happen all over the world all the time, whatcha gonna do, etc".

So ? What part of that prevents you from feeling empathy for the people involved in the tragedies that were brought to your attention through the media (for whatever reason) ?

You are familiar with this particular event, you saw the people involved, you know details...and if you are not capable of feeling any emotions simply because you know in the abstract that other tragedies happen all the time all over the place....then there's something wrong with you.

It is inhuman and sick not to be able to empathize - especially when you SEE a concrete case.

Over-rationalization around the inevitability of tragedies all over the world has no place here.

It's enough to imagine your own child trapped in that boat, seeing the water rising ...and it becomes painfully clear what a freak you are if you can dismiss the whole thing so easily in the name of supposed "rationality"...or not wanting to "upset yourself ...precious, rational you".
