What cultures have influenced your countries the most? There are many countries in the world that have contributions from all sorts of cultures. For example, places like the Netherlands were ruled by Spain for some period. Are there any traditions or anything that have lasted? How much has the immigrant population contributed?
Here in the USA, we have all sorts of things. After the British, German culture probably had the most influence historically, in fact many cities around the country are currently celebrating Oktoberfest. We have St. Patrick's day thanks to the Irish, Cinco De Mayo from the Mexicans, some cities have Chinese New Year celebrations.
For those of you in other countries or have lived in other countries, I'm curious to know what you all celebrate.
Mostly Russia and Poland. I don't think any other countries have or had influence on Ukrainian culture which is as considerable as two named countries.
If I exclude the early influence of Netherlands and Italian influence ( when it comes to classical art, in particular,) then it's a combination of France and Germany. These are the two countries that played a major role in shaping and influencing Russian culture on a much deeper level than Octoberfest celebrations or any national fest out there.( That Russians had plenty of their own and didn't need to borrow anywhere.) However the system of education, administration, the philosophy, science, art, music - all that starting from the 18th century was shaped either under German or French influence ( as I've mentioned including influence of Netherlands on earlier stage.) From that time on, Russian upper class was observing, absorbing and re-defying what "Russian" is, accepting or denying "things European." Even this fact itself determined the split in Russian national philosophy, identifying two major currents of the "Westernizers" and "Slavophiles."
While the US was undoubtedly influenced first and utmost by English culture that created the foundation for that country, Russia was shaped and influenced by Continental Europe.
Canada would historically be the British, French, and Scots. But now a days its mostly America.
We also have influences from immigrant communities in different locales. Growing cultural contributions from India, China, and the Middle East, such as the giant annual Diwali parade in Vancouver (going on for almost a century due to the Sikhs), things like red bean paste balls are available even at places like Shopper's Drug Mart Pharmacy as ready made, and Shisha bars being a common hang out in my university years in Montreal. Cultural influences from France and Britain still exist but American influence is growing. French influence, while absent for many centuries, is starting to grow in Quebec these days with increased immigration from this country.
Portugal, obviously, although I would not say it is a major influence, but actually our core culture. After Portugal, I would say the largest contributions are from Italy, Germany and Spain, and in a lesser extension from Japan and Lebanon. If we include people without a proper country, it's fair to say the Yoruba and Mbundu people brought major contributions - despite against their desire, since they were forced to move the here as slaves, centuries ago.
Italy, Mexico, UK and China have influenced the America the most.
Germany has influenced the US far more than Italy and China.
