Why so many Americans trying to leave?
It's amazing to me - these forums are full of Americans looking to move to countries they have never even visited, just to leave the US.
What is going on?

I think people have always wanted to experience something new. This has always gone on. People move here from Europe too.

One big reason why we left was because we were disgusted that the current administration was voted into power again.

i think that there is a sense of "malaise" in this country not seen since the Carter era. We are ruled by a government who cares much more about how to keep big business happy than how to fund the needs of its citizens, ie, healthcare, social security & medicare. At the same time, we americans are being taxed more, working more and getting less benefits from work than before. We are constantly fed the bull***t that the inflation rate is very low, yet virtually ALL DAILY expenses are increasing incl gasoline, food (which they don't include in the inflation index), dry cleaners, hair dressers, you name it. We are also getting very crowded as a nation with the poor of other countries flooding our major cities and demanding public services that the tax-paying citizens are expected to pay for.
i think that people just want to get a taste of cultures that are less stressful, less expensive and just want to enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

You hit the nail on the head, for my boyfriend and myself at least. We're looking for a move that will allow us a better quality of life with less stress, more security and more time to enjoy one another and our future family.

where did you guys move to and how do you like it?
My opinion is, America is a very insular place. The average American can't even point to most countries if they were given a map. We have always been extremely ignorant about the outside world and our media is heavily censored keeping people pretty dull on whats going on. However with the advent of the internet, people now get to read about and interact with other cultures. That coupled with unfettered access the American psyche is changing drastically. Before you had the rest of the world willing to up and leave their countries for change with out hesitation, because they had a view of what was out there. Now we are seeing more of that from Americans because we too have been opened up to the world mentally and physically. Internet + globalization = broader perspective.
I also believe people feeling the squeeze financially and politically now have the ability to go on the net and find alternatives. Before people just sucked it up and remained in their position.
