Actually, aside from accommodation NYC is probably one of the better cities to have fun in if you're on a budget. You can get $1 slices of pizza, or filling meals for $5 from food-carts, buffets at bodegas. A lot of attractions are free, like museums and stuff (or there's a 'suggested donation'), plus even if you don't pay for anything just walking around the city is fascinating. Plus the subway is cheap. London is a lot pricier in terms of food and transport.

Well, even when I was a teen and had no money of my own, I still got starry-eyed just riding through Manhattan in the back seat of a car. So, you're right that it's amazing to see no matter which way.
Nonetheless, it does of course make a difference whether you experience the city like a pauper or like a celebrity or the many points in between. If you dream of staying in a fancy hotel in midtown, dine at upscale restaurants, watch a Broadway show and shop on 5th Avenue, then it can get very pricey. Even the admission fees to a lot of places add up.
