Default San Francisco vs. Rio de Janeiro

San Francisco (USA) or Rio de Janeiro(BRASIL): which of these two beautiful cities do you favor the most and why?

Although, I'm a U.S. citizen, I prefer Rio over San Francisco because its landscape is most spectacular of the two.

San Francisco because though San Francisco ( and Oakland) have their social problems there is nothing quite like the poverty and violence which exist in the Rio de Janeiro Favelas.

I live in San Francisco but love to go to Rio and have been there often. They are both totally unique, both on beautiful bays with big hills and have great architecture, great nightlife and vibrant populations.
Rio is tropical with incredible beaches with warm water and much more sensual. SF is quite a bit cooler but has a much more hip, modern vibe.
If I could divide my time equally between the two, I would be in heaven!

Wow, this thread was dead for nearly 3 years... but I'll bite.

I'll pick San Francisco over Rio.

Simply put: SF, doesn't have the high crime and poverty like Rio.

Rio seems like a WONDERFUL place to visit. But to live there? Heck no.

Also, SF, is in the Bay Area, one of the great metros in the States.

LA and SD, is only a day's drive; so, is Seattle and Vancouver.

I was born in San Francisco and lived there in my youth in the 1950s through mid 1970s. I have not lived there since then, but I still love my home town in spite of it's social problems. But whatever social issues linger on the streets of SF are trivial or irrelevant compared to Rio de Janeiro.

I have visited Brazil several times, including Rio. There are many cities in Brazil that I like and would enjoy living in, but Rio is not one of them. Rio has a population of around 10 million vs less than 800K in San Francisco. In Rio, if you are not careful where you go and and at what time of the day you go it can be a serious mistake. The crime and poverty is at a scale that is hard to describe unless you have seen it. The air pollution and water pollution in Rio will make you choke. Yes, the scenery is beautiful and the city and it's people are exotic. I just would not live there. However, put me on a bus in Rio and send me about 120 kilometers northeast to Buzios and I could life quite happily and content in beautiful coastal town.

City of Rain will become famous soon enoughCity of Rain will become famous soon enough
well, when i was in San Francisco 2 years ago it seemed like a huge dump for homeless people. they were EVERYWHERE. it was very unpleasant.

and i can imagine that Rio must be even worse, even though ive never been there, so ill pick SF.
