Why do so many planes not fly over Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Mongolia and Western China but have no problem flying over countries like Iraq, Iran, Pakistan and even Afghanistan (like Air France right at this moment from Paris to Delhi)?

Map is from 5 mins ago.

Look at everyone avoiding Eastern Ukraine by flying over Russia

Probably has something to do with a lack of code shares and layovers in the 'stans and I don't even know a single thing about Western China, so that must speak for its amount of visitors to some degree.

How many things do most people know about Iraq, Iran and Pakistan?

I've seen planes overflying the ex-Soviet 'Stans as recently as yesterday. I think it's just the fact that great circle routes to "common" destinations (Europe-Asia) don't really go through those 'Stans. Another possibility is that when flights detour around Ukrainian airspace to fly through Turkey, the quickest route is to then head through the Middle East.

Check out the great circle route from DEL to CDG. It goes through Ukraine, so a detour through Turkey would end up going through the Middle East. (Notwithstanding the fact that actual routes may deviate from great circle routes depending on headwinds and tailwinds).

Well those fall directly in the most logical paths going from Europe, North America, and Africa through to Asia. Seems like there is far less reason to fly up in Central Asia in most cases.

Not If you travel between Southeast China/Taiwan/Philippines and Southern Europe or between Southeast Asia and Northwestern Europe or between Northeast Asia and the Greater Middle East etc. etc.

Talking about this area...

North Caucasus has been making problems for years and terrorists are on the rise, i'd say 2 flies in 1 hit!

They should make that entire area between Moscow-Black Sea-Georgian/Azerbaijani border and Kiev-Kazakh border a no fly zone and get control of the situation.
I'm afraid all of the important unanswered questions surrounding this tragedy gravitate towards the other geopolitical axis:

1. Why does the Ukraine government's evidence for their allegations pinning the blame on pro-Russian separatists hinge around one youtube clip with a fabricated timestamp?
2. Why did the Ukrainian separatists in possession of the black box promptly hand it over to Malaysian authorities, when clear instructions from Moscow in said youtube clip were that they hide the recorders?
3. Why did Ukrainian air traffic controllers allow deviation of the MH17 flight path to the north side of the "anti-terrorist operation zone", prior to the tragedy?
4. Why did Ukraine's SBU security service confiscate recordings of conversations between Ukrainian air traffic control officers and the crew of the doomed airliner?
5. Why does US intelligence on the events surrounding the tragedy deny the existence of Ukrainian Buk SAMs deployed in Eastern Ukraine?
6. Why do Spanish air traffic controllers based in Ukraine around the time of the tragedy give reports of two Ukrainian jets "escorting" MH17, prior to the tragedy?
7. Cui bono? Certainly not the Russians. Nor the pro-Russian separatists. The Ukraine government, in contrast, has everything to gain by pinning the attack on Russia and the separatists.

We're veering a little off-topic towards current events, so I suggest we move this to a more relevant thread if you want to discuss it further: MH17 "worse than 9/11" for the Dutch
