Angkor, Cambodia, the largest city in the world in the 9th century before war, climate change and abandonment in the 14th century - it's the world's largest ancient city and ancient site. The main temple, Angkor Wat is the largest religious building in the world, covering 40x the area of St Peter's, the largest church/cathedral. It too was once gilded, it's roofs and towers covered in gold and interior a forest of carving. The city covered over 1,000 sq km (2/3 the size of today's Greater London boundaries) - by comparison the nearest ancient city to rival it in size was Tikal in Guatemala, that was only 150 sq km, while ancient Rome comes in at under 14 sq km. It was linked with a vast canal and reservoir system, some canals/ moats 700ft wide, and some of the huge rectangular barays 8km long.

all that remains are the stone built temples (in Eastern Asia wood being the preferred material due to earthquakes, but very susceptible to fire and to rot away with time):

In the modern world, I would say either New York City or London. In the ancient world, Athens or Rome.

Lots of good responses. Thanks for all the extra educational information. Ill try and elaborate more on why I think Seattle is the best later. Ill say for now, to me its not about the size of a city and its more about the quality of life and the overall management of the city. Also on a side note, Seattle is in King County, which is named after Martin Luther King Jr. That says alot about the entire area. Its a really good mix of race and culture. New York is comparable when it comes to cultural diversity but the peace, health, and overall quality of life in Seattle is better. And Ill try and put some pictures up so you can see the beauty of the Northwest, the Seattle area, and Mt Rainier.

Ancient Roma. It was the high point, if not the highest, in the development of human civilization in numerous facets: politics, military, law, art, architecture, theater, music, etc. You name it. It laid an extraordinarily strong foundation stone for the entire Western civilization to come, including the modern time. The Western world stopped developing for a long period of time when Rome died. It took a long while for people to pick up again where Rome had left off and continue from there. So in a sense, ancient Rome is still with us today in spirit. How could it not be the greatest city of all time.
