Considering the fact that everybody virtually has a gun, I do feel much safer in Italy than in the US honestly.
Be aware, I don't want to begin the usual, boring debate gun vs non gun: nobody cares of your guns, keep them if you want.
Most people that I know in the U.S don't own guns.
Not true, you can go safely alone with your phone everywhere you want.
No ones looks for phones, like I said before, in Barcelona the 95% of the targets are drunk youth tourists in the night, the guy comes close to them, makes like a football move and it keeps their wallets.
In Madrid it's the "cluelessness" method, she approaches you with a newspaper, some flowers, etc and while you're distracted, she puts the hand in your pocket to achieve your wallet.
But no one assaults you or it tears out your phone like it happens on New York (I've put the news article above), or as the dozens of videos in the subway of NY when this happens.
It is more dangerous to go with your phone in the hands in the suburbs of NY or LA and to get robbed. In Spain, never. I was in Barcelona Sants and Barcelona Nord and the centre of Barcelona doing tens and tens of photos and talking in Whatsapp with my phone... There were also lots of youth female tourists from Russia, Scandinavia, Germany, etc with their phones and no one bothered them.
What you've heard is wrong, buddy.
Nope, the loss is not different, besides, it can be solved. In the US you can't deport an american citizen for doing thefts. But you can deport someone from Northern Africa or from Eastern Europe...
That is such a lie. Lots of people get pickpocketed on the metro. My friend got pickpocketed on Barcelona metro, that is more unlikely to happen in NYC. I also ended up walking near Santa Eulà lia and that place was sketchy as hell. Spain overall is very safe though.
