Inspired by the American version of this thread, I want to know how familiar are the people outside of Australia with these smaller cities/towns in that country.
Not very familiar! I am a Canadian, and more knowledgeable then most about geography. I voted gold coast, wollongong, cairns, and Alice springs. Cairns I know the least about, just a name and a vague sense of it being somewhere on the east coast.

Gold Coast and Cairns are easy, have heard of them many times.
Geelong, Wollongong, Wagga Wagga and Newcastle i've heard about but don't know anything about them besides being located in Australia.
I have heard of Newcastle, Cairns, Alice Springs and Gold Coast..
