Nope the UK was the biggest migrant source until recently. It was by far the dominant group well into the 20th century, while I think by the early 1800s Britain had ceased to be the primary source of immigration to the United States. Huge difference demographically.
Biggest, but a part of a much larger mix. Also up until the late 1970s the fairly large number of migrants from the Irish Republic were included in the "British" total.
But that pattern you describe is fully consistent with my point. The US is a lot older than Australia. Migration of free settlers to Australia, as opposed to transportation of comparatively small numbers of convicts, really only began in significant numbers in the 1830s.

Supposedly German is the largest ancestry group in the US, but those with some British (English and Scottish) ancestry might be unreported. Most of those who identify as just 'American' likely have British and Irish ancestry. Still, I wonder why the US isn't as dominated by people of British ancestry like Australia, NZ and a lesser extent Canada, since it began as a British colony or colonies. Those 3 nations also received a lot of Irish, especially since Ireland was until British rule until 1916, although the US did too. How come cities like New York, Boston, Philly are more known for Italians, Irish or even Jews than British/English/Scottish Americans? Weirdly, someone with the last name 'Smith' in NYC is most likely black.
Not that Australia didn't receive a ton of other immigrants, but it seems English Americans especially seem either unreported or strangely underrepresented in the States.
I think when the British lost the thirteen colonies during Revolutionary War, they were just less immigration there because it wasn't their own colony and it's normal. On the other side, they had 3 big other lands (Canada, Australia and New Zealand) who were still under the British Empire so it was maybe easier for them to immigrate there.
But like someone said, English people didn't stop immigrate in the US, it was just less important than German, Irish or Italian immigration. In the 19th century, some immigrate to the textile factories in New England or in California during the Golden rush. English immigrants were also the most numerous in Utah and Idaho.

The second most popular response to virtually every question in the Australian census is "no answer".
The actual responses to the question of where this person was born in the last census of Australia was
Australia 69.9%
Overseas 24.6%
No answer 5.5%.
So correctly Australia was somewhere between 24.6% and 30.1% foreign born in August 2011.

27% is the number quoted in ABS 2071.0 for 2011.
One the significant "hidden" aspects of Australia's immigrant population is the age profile of various groups. The 'average' European immigrant, including the UK, is someone around 60, so those number are going to change very dramatically over the next couple of decades.
