I am sure there are people out there who love LA but I never thought of it as a good place to live. It is a great place to visit but it is very overrated.

London over LA anytime- now London vs NYC or London vs Chicago-that would be a different story.

London is expensive and youll be living in a daggy part of town (but dont worry, everyone lives in a daggy part of town, and it's kinda cool). The rich and poor mix, as do the races (ie London's one of the few places where Blacks and minorities earn more than Whites). There will be loads to do, the options are literally limitless - however your budget isn't ($8 for a pint of beer in the centre, $6/7 outside).

Personally I'd go for the sheer hell of living in a different country (if youre from US), plus London is the cheap flight centre of the world, with Europe at your doorstep. If you do Ryanair, Easyjet etc, and book in advance it'll cost you about $50-$80 for return flights to Rome/ Barcelona/ Paris etc.

Use Skyscanner.com

In short, save up.

But don't ditch LA too easily. The weather in London also sucks - it doesnt rain much, but it's overcast most of the time.

In short if youre going more for sociability and adventure (and not liveability): London
If youre going more for comfort and ease and good weather: LA

Generally speaking, besides weather and 0-100 degree geographical diversity in a daytrip, London beats LA hands down.

However, as mentioned, the OP may have some particular career goals, say in the aerospace/military industry or entertainment, where LA may be tops. On the other hand, if global finance, then even more so London.

But to answer the question, more student-exciting? Well, what do you consider exciting?

For me it was browsing the classical history and archeology section of bookstores and all the pasta and pizza I could eat for five pounds around Leicester Square. Whatever your general cultural interest, you can pursue it in depth in London, while at the same time be a relatively short plane ride away from specific centers.

But what if it's specifically beaches, blondes and bikinis, fast cars, mountains and deserts?

Just asking.

If you want access to the outdoors and the fit and healthy lifestyle, with some good culture mixed in, L.A. all the way (beaches, hiking every weekend, snowboarding, endless yoga and cross-fit studios, vegan fare, juice 'bars' .) People don't move to L.A. for the CITY, they move here for the lifestyle. Have that in mind.

Now, if you want an urban experience that will blow your mind away, London. Los Angeles doesn't even come close to feeling that cosmopolitan (even though it is, you just have to find it).
