People used to tell me I had an accent and asked me where I was from. I told them I was from across the border.
"That's funny...you don't look Mexican!"
"No, the OTHER border!"
"Huh? What other border? What are you talking about?"
In the US the phrase "The Border" invariably seems to mean the Mexican border for whatever reason. Probably because we hear more about that one.
LOL these remind me of the questions park guests would asked when I worked at SeaWorld like, "How often do you have to repaint the whales?" or "so when does Shamu go to the other parks to perform?" LOL

I think you get too much of your information from online sources or slanted news sources.
The more you travel, the more you realize that many people could care less about Americans and the USA. They are too pre-occupied with making ends meet and trying to fix their own lives. Also, not everyone is into politics or learning about other countries. Or, they are more interested in countries with a strong presence in their own region.
For example, my family in Brazil has absolutely no interest in coming here and they never talk about Americans or even ask questions about them. They are too pre-occupied with their local life to care. They also like their country and are content with traveling around locally. Vacations are in Brazil or in neighboring Uruguay and Argentina.
When I lived in Spain, my Spanish roommates also didn't really care about anything having to do with the USA. I lived there already 10 years ago and to this day, they have no interest in coming here. They never asked questions about life in the USA either.
Americans are too self-absorbed and self-centered, thinking that the world is obsessed with them and always thinking about them.
Exactly. Same thing I noticed. It is usually the far right wing Americans that believe the entire world is jealous of all our wondrous freedoms, etc.
Finland is filled with spiders and evil crap-heads. I just did what you did, and you probably won't lay a finger on China.
Anyway, people really don't care about the USA as much, every world power draws some attention and we tend to ignore all the moderate opinions.

Oh stop it, you're hunting a dairy cow with a machine gun. I take it you only know about the western world since your comparing the USA against it, as if the other 5.5 billion people in the world don't matter. I don't know a single French Canadian, South American, or non-anglic European who has integrated with an African or Asian country the way an Anglic person has, one of the advisors for the Thai royal family is an American actually. Enjoy your powder whigs and "sophistication" over there!
I know a lot about Canada and have no desire to return after having a ridiculous experience at the Buffalo, NY crossing. I usually fly into any major European airport, Schiphol in Amsterdam last time, clear in 2 minutes.
Canadian border patrol agents are arrogant, stupid and like to give you hard times for no reason whatsoever. I can understand if I was some person coming from some 3rd World country but seriously, how many American citizens are looking to immigrate to Canada illegally?
I wish Canadians and Americans could work, live and travel in both countries without so much hassle.
Oh lord, how much have you dealt with American border patrol agents? They can also be arrogant, stupid and give you a hard time for absolutely no reason. Some are so arrogant it is beyond ridiculous. I have years of experience dealing with them.
One tried to belittle me (he was Filipino) telling me he had no way of knowing that I was a U.S. citizen because I had no birth certificate on me. He was yelling at me for no reason and questioning me for no reason. Made me get out of my car, searched me, etc...told me he would not let me through.
He then asked- 'give me ONE good reason I should believe you are a US citizen?' I responded: 'The best clue is that I speak better English than you!' lol I just couldn't help myself, I was furious. He was so upset he turned red and sent me to secondary to make me waste more time. I'm lucky he didn't throw me in jail on some false accusation.
Since Obama is in office, I feel like US relations with all the Western world are quite degrading. He is focusing his policies on Asia, taking the West for granted.
Yeah I was reading an article recently where they were saying that the Canada/U.S relationship is dying of neglect and lays the blame squarely at Obama and his indifference. I don't really know but Obama seems to be a different man now than when he first took office. He seemed to be full of hope and inspirational - looking at him now he just looks weathered and tired - as if the job was far too demanding of him and that he took a bite off of something more than he could chew.
I could be wrong but that is the general impression I get seeing and hearing him.

Lol! I used to live behind the Iron Curtain, so you're very much mistaken.
