Perhaps "irrationally resentful" is a better word than "jealous".

It's not jealousy. Just bigotry.

Let me be very factual here : as an european if I want to travel to the US as a tourist I need the ESTA authorization.
That ESTA program is a visa in disguise, which costs 15 $. Fact is, I have no problem with paying those 15 bucks, but I do have a problem with the US government not trusting me enough as to coerce me into this ESTA program. Lack of trust is not good for friendship. That's why the next time I fly to Mexico/ Central America, I'll skip the layover in the States (where sometimes I sleep overnight in hotels) and instead of using a US company (AA or USAir), I'll go with Iberia with a layover in Madrid. It will mean less tourist money for the US . Sorry, folks.

Quite frankly, I also think that ESTA is a major pain in the ass... Is there something similar for US citizens that want to visit Europe (more specifically: the Schengen area)? You know, reciprocity and so on.

Edit: Apparently not. http://www.ecfr.eu/scorecard/2012/usa/26

no, all I got was a passport stamp the last time I was there and no questions by a bored border guard.

OK.

We're crying all the way to the bank. Tourism remains one of the biggest businesses in the US in spite of your protest. But duly noted!

True though ESTA does sound obnoxious, I'd be annoyed to.
