I am from one of the cloudiest countries in the world - one of the cloudiest major conurbations I'm sure - and it's true that the cloudiness does impact your mood, and my mood is definitely better when the sun is shining, but it's not that bad. The weather is actually very inoffensive here most of the time - it's rarely very cold or very hot - usually middling. No great shakes. You don't even notice it most of the time.
Much of Canada, at least where the majority of people live, has warm summers, bordering hot, and is actually rather sunny - a LOT sunnier than the UK. I would rather have very cold weather between Nov and Mar and more sunshine, especially in summer.
I am from Vancouver, the weather is just like England, it sucks.
Now I live further south, and the weather is awesome. The reason why the English are so sour and dour is probably the weather. If they lived in Italy they would probably be more jovial like the Italians. Living in a cold grey climate is the worst, and you realize that after you live somewhere with sunlight...

I am from a country that is hot and hotter and trust me, it does not make one happy either.
You wouldn't last a year in Canada. All people in hot places say what you are saying, because they never lived in another climate. You have no idea how good you have it. There is a reason why people move places like Florida and Hawaii for the weather. No one moves to Winnipeg for the weather. Let me know when people start developing SAD because it is too warm outside!

I've lived in England for the best part of my life and I've never considered the people here dour, even after a year in Spain. One of the best qualities of the people here is our ability to laugh at ourselves and make fun of our country and its climate.
There are ultimately more important things in life than weather. I would never consider moving somewhere for the weather alone - jobs are the most important, followed by things to do. I like cold winters, but I would never live in some boring town in the Canadian Prairies.

Probably why the place with the greyest weather in the US (Washington State/Seattle) also has the highest rates of depression and highest suicide rates in the US and was home to one of the most depressing genres of music (grunge)
I think ignorance is bliss. And most Americans are ignorant (not stupid) but straight up ignorant. Not only to ills that happen around the world, but all so to the messed up thing that happen in side the USA. Most Americans go around blissfully ignorant to how harsh the world really is. There is saying in Proverbs in the Christian Bible, to increase knowledge is to increase sorrow.
I don;t mean this in a negative way. I'm not saying dumb, I'm not saying stupid. Most Americans lack knowledge of the "real" world. At home and abroad. One reason they are so easily influenced by the media.

I don't think rainy weather plays a factor in suicide rates, otherwise how do you explain Florida, Arizona and New Mexico having higher rates than Washington state?
It does play a part in certain people with depression, SAD disorder. However it obviously doesn't mean that these people are killing themselves, otherwise the stats would prove it.

Hard to believe I know, but some people don't care for endless sun and heat. I last about 2 months before I start craving cooler and wetter weather.

And those people are more likely to be depressed and miserable. Many depressed people want to be depressed and enjoy gloomy weather and dark art and television. But the ideal climate or human habitation is something like Hawaii or San Diego. That's why people flock there in droves for the weather. The Human body requires a certain amount of sunlight to operate in optimal condition. It is isn't a matter of preference, it is hardwired into our nature to seek climates that are warm and with plenty of sunshine.

It's just jealousy. People from less developed, less affluent countries like the US feel they need to bash more developed and affluent countries like the Nordic countries or Canada all the time.
The US more affluent and developed than any of those countries. I am Canadian and live in the US. Canada is a wonderful country, but if I am being honest the US is more developed and "advanced". How is the US less developed or less affluent than Europe and Canada? Sorry but have the Dutch even put a man on the moon yet? Why are people fleeing the Netherlands in droves with the US as a top destination? Why is it that you in particular want to leave the Netherlands? Why are Americans on average much richer than the Dutch? Why do they consistently nvent much more technology that changes the course of world history? Your whole username is dedicated to bashing the US in the most ridiculous ways so you really have no credibility. You are clearly the one who is deeply jealous since all you talk about is the US. You have the the classic European inferiority complex, always trying puff your chest up while the Americans are busy getting real things done. Speaking of miserable people in crappy climates...

You're going way too overboard with the bad weather stuff.. I actually don't love winter like most people but 4 months of cold weather and 8 months of cool/warm and hot weather is actually a nice variation. After 5 months of warm to hot weather its nice to kind of get a reprieve from the heat.. Not everyone needs to live in year round sunny locales to be happy whatsoever and some of us like 4 seasons and the variety that comes with them and the vast majority of us don't suffer from SAD (small minority) - there are even different leisure pursuits and there is just something refreshing about seeing the colder fall weather come in - the sky is magnificent and just different and some snow at Christmas adds a magical ambiance to a festive season..

Toronto and Montreal have actual summertimes. The climate is mediocre, but not as bad as Vancouver or Northern Europe. Helsinki (as an example) has an average high of 70 degrees in the warmest month of the year. This is after having a Toronto-like winter. So on a summer day, it is average for it to be in the 60's most of the day. Then factor in wind, and sunlight. So on a summer day in the hottest moth of the year in Helskini it can easily be cool to cold with cloud cover and temperatures around 64. That is just sad because it's not summertime. In Toronto you get an actual reward for enduring the winter and it is glorious. In Much of Europe it is just dismal weather all year round, with far less sunshine than Toronto or Montreal. In Helsinki you endure a serious winter all year only to get an abysmal summer in the 60's. That is like Alaska. People develop SAD in these palces for a reason. No one develops SAD in San Diego because it is a climate perfectly fit for human habitation. Again, our natural instinct is to live in a place with weather like San Diego or Honolulu, not Helsinki. Of course many get used to living in these climates when they have no way to leave, but their natural instinct is to live in an optiomal climate. This is way so many Canadians spend part of the year in the US, and why so many northern Europeans vacation anywhere warm including the sub-par beaches in the Meditteranean. On this board alone, a high percentage of Canadians have homes or spend 6 months in Florida, Arizona, etc. Nobody vacations in Vancouver or Calgary for the weather. Nobody says "hey let's go take a flight to Canada so we can lay out on our lawn chairs on a glorious 8C overcast drizzling day in Vancouver!". Fusion I know you've never lived in a nother climate, but when you try it changes everything ,trust me on that. I once believed the Vancouver climate was "good" until I lived in other places and realized that most of the world's population doesn't live in a cold overcast rainy climate, and most of the world would never even want to live in such a climate.
