Rio has one advantage: when you see the scenario from above it looks like it was all planned by an architect. Very very beautiful. But when you're on the floor it's not so beautiful in most parts of the city.

Culture and nightlife: tie, maybe. And Rio is not as car-centred as LA.

LA wins in economy, safety, weather, parks, shows, etc.

Rio has, I think, by far the most beautiful setting in the world. Simply glorious.
BUT, the city close at hand is not very appealing, squalid looking in many parts and not even that special on the street level in its nicer sections like Ipanema/Leblon.

Los Angeles does have beautiful geography. A semi-desert slash Mediterranean landscape is a pleasant sight to me. Don't forget, LA also has snowy mountains. Not everyone is into jungles and plethora of trees.

Why is choosing Rio's architecture "peculiar" too? Lol...It looks gritty and at the same time exotic. LA architecture may look bland to me because we already have a lot of it in Sydney and most of Australia. Perhaps for Brazilians the edifices of LA and America would stand out?

Let us not kid ourselves here, Los Angeles is an immeasurably better city than Rio de Janeiro.

Well, even though, in Geography and consequently, in outdoor activities, it doesnt compare to Rio.
Mass transit in Rio is not good, but is also incomparably better than LA.
Maybe in architecture you're right, the fact of Brazil having no highrises makes then amazing for us.
