In Geografy Rio wins by far. Rio has gorgeus beaches and montains inside the city and around. LA has the best ones mostly around. Rio seams to have more and diversificated rich and charming areas near the beaches too.
LA has a Downtown more impressive due to its supertalls, while Rio's is more diversificated by far but its also dirt and chaotic.
In general Rio has a more impressive scenary, but LA is very interesting for sure.
All i know is that Rio has a perfect geography, it seems like the nature there was built by the hands of god.
I don't know much about both cities to compare. Probably LA has many advantages because of the localization, development and number of tourists, while Rio is behind in these aspects.

Very hard for any city to beat Rio in geography.
LA's geography is still pretty great. In LA, I've stood on the Santa Monica Mountains above Malibu on a warm winter day and seen the Pacific Ocean in one direction and snow capped mountains in the other.

On a clear winter day, from the hills in Palos Verdes you can see far off onto the Pacific to Catalina to the west, the LA basin and snow capped San Gabriels to the east, and the Santa Monicas to the northwest.
Los Angeles has a great and diverse geography but no city can capture such a stunning backdrop in one place like Rio de Janeiro. All photos are originals by me.
