The thread on alcohol got me thinking...

About how where I live in Quebec no one ever talks about sin. Or at least "sin" hasn't really been much of a topic since the 1960s. Prior to that, sin was a big deal here. You didn't want to be a sinner. Oh no.

People here today are mostly focused on being happy in their lives, and as long as you obey the laws and don't cause harm to anyone else, people are generally just fine with whatever it is you want to do with yourself.

So is "sin" (and related notions) something people talk about or care about where you live?

I think at this point is a religious issue rather than a cultural society issue in most places.

According to the Holy Bible, sin is sin. Do not exist big sin or little sin.
That's how I understand.

I guess it depends on what you want to believe.

Quite frankly, I'm pretty glad that Austrian society doesn't apply a moral standard only based on religion.

Sin as a word, or the definitions stated in the bible?

Paying too much for a product is a sin, or to betray someone.

I don't even know what the bible says is a sin, but definitely know that it's not anything people worry about. And this is Finland, nothing is holy.

I believe the Catholic church at least does rank sins: cardinal sins, deadly sins, etc.

Please state them. For once, I don't know everything.

Deadly sins are at least: killing, whoring, ???, cursing your god, having other gods?

Mortal sin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That said, a mortal sin is pretty much washed away with a short "Ego te absolvo." and approx. 10 Ave Marias

Oh, man. I'll be in the purgatory for a million years. The only ones I think I've missed are murder, rape and euthanasia. Oh, wait, protestants don't have a purgatory, so I will just continue perjuring, bestializing and having idols.

And we don't say Ave Marias either, because it's not godlike and it's popelike or something like that.

This made me think. Man, Protestant heaven must be dull. Finns, Swedes, Danes, English, Germans and Dutch. Who are there anyway? Luther, Calvin, Peter Stuyvesant, Mannerheim, Carl von Clausewitz, Gustav Adolf II, Niels Bohr? Booooring. Hope Wellington has some good war stories at least.
