I'm from Vancouver, Canada. Originally from Hong Kong. Would really like to move to Southwest England but I heard employment and economy not good there. Is that true?

im not entirely sure i can answer as i am from the whats known as the midlands, that is i am in the middle of uk. All i can say is the south are apparently more wealthy than us here in the midlands, but i presume that is down to cost of living in that area. i feel the employment issue is the same as any other country. If it helps, i recently visited toronto (fantastic place) and found their prices were equilivant to here, i dont know if this makes sense, i suppose im trying give you a picture of our financial state. As for employment, as far as im aware in the south like everywhere else in the uk, if you have a trade i dont think there is much problem, but dont take it from me, i work in psychiatry, so do your research and good luck

I live in West Oxfordshire ( not quite the South West but almost) which has the lowest unemployment rate in the UK and lowest crime too. The houses are more expensive than Canada ( though Vancouver is very expensive so it might be more comparable)as are cars and petrol but otherwise prices are really similar ( I spent a month in Vancouver last year). If you wanted to move to the UK , West Oxfordshire and Oxford are pretty good places. Beautiful landscape, gorgeous countryside dotted with pretty stone villages and Oxford as its "capital", the most beautiful city in the UK with Bath and Edinburgh.
Bath ( also just on the verge of the South West) is also you worth considering it.
Do you have a job offer or are you just thinking of coming and seeing what's there? I would recommend spending time in the area before committing yourself as you might hate it, or decide it's not for you. Plus you will need a work permit as far as I know as you won't be an EU citizen.
Basically the best advice is do your homework thoroughly !

I from the Netherlands, i live in a small town (1500people) near the costs called Petten, my girlfriend is from South East Amsterdam (near the soccer stadium the Arena). Although i live in a crapy small town, everything is nearby here in the Netherlands, some bigger cities (Alkmaar ) are just 20min driving, Amsterdam is (@ top speed ) 50min driving.
The surroundings here are amazing, lots of nature and stuff, the sea, and in summer time many many many german tourists. Hope to move to Alkmaar (AZ soccer team!) when i am able to buy a bigger house .

Thank you Wanabe and Mooseketeer for your tips. Let me know if I'm not supposed to continue on this thread. New to discussion boards. Already very familiar with the lifestyle in the UK. Also doing research on a regular basis (country websites/jobsites/newsletters etc) but it's also really important to ask questions directly from helpful folks like you. Much appreciated. will look into Oxfordshire - it's just that we would like to be close to the ocean. Hence, the southwest preference.

I am an American living in London (for the past 8 years). Before that I lived in Barcelona, Spain and Mexico City, Mexico. Met my husband and had a baby while here in London and will now all be moving (back) to NJ--for me it will be the first time in 17 years that I have lived back "home", for my husband, a new adventure.
