This is a very left-wing, liberal progressive place but hunting is totally accepted as a part of life here.
I have never heard anyone say hunting should be banned and those who choose not to hunt are generally cool with hunters as they help control animal populations, for example.
Yep. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a Canadian who is straight up against hunting in general.
Hunting is quite popular here in rural areas and among landowners. You have to do the hunters' exam and apply for a hunting rifle. The registry has 300,000 members, out of a population of 5,5 million but of course not all of them are active. Hunting in areas below 1000 ha of owned land is banned, but the Nature and Wildlife Agency sometimes give special permits to hunting clubs for renegade wolves or bears.
Hunting is mostly viewed as a positive thing, as elks have few natural enemies left and the hunters curtail the numbers. Every hunting club or group have to get a permit to kill every species and the numbers of them, and the timeframe is also limited.
Persons aged 15-18 might get the hunters' licence, but has to hit the woods with their guardian. Persons with mental or criminal problems are denied.

So that means hunting is only allowed on large tracts of land? Is rural land all in private hands or is there some public land*?
*Massachusetts is 5.5% publicly owned, New York is 37%.

Yes. Outside cities like 80% of the total land is in private hands, and you can't go hunting if you only have a postal stamp worth of land. The remaining 20% is in the hands of the state or NGO's.
