Free education and healthcare would be nice to have but unfortunately, nothing is "free", except for sunshine and air.
Its much better than paying millions for a treatment. In the end in UK we always end up being in the better position as we obviously pay less.
Also you can go and see the doctor how many times you want without paying a single penny. If I had to pay like £60 for a doctor appointment i'd never go.
Apparently we are not on the same page on what constitutes a threat to others.
In the US threats are not protected free speech and up until now, you did not mention any specifics. You said hate speech and it seemed clear that we weren't talking about threats. The two are not necessarily the same thing.
"in addition to the Participant Fee, some program Participants may pay a Point of Service Fee to their clinic at the time services are received. For example, an additional fee will be paid each time a Participant visits a physician, emergency room, or picks up a prescription. "
I don't know much about it, but I don't think people are leaving their private insurers for this program...so it's doesn't sound like it really equates to the access and coverage of universal healthcare in most of Europe.
Could you expand on this?
Also tuition in Oregon...has this passed yet?
I don't live in San Francisco so I cannot give you the details on it. Looks like Oregon hasn't passed it yet so I will stand corrected and say that it's the only state pushing for it.
I don't know. What are some big issues currently? I would say in some things, like religion, Europeans are much more liberal or "left". We don't have even a word for "pro choice" or "pro life" (abortion).
For example all main parties in the Nordics are "big state", which is traditionally and especially in the US leftist. And not only on economy, but regulation and checks and balances too.
Maybe I'm used to the more liberal parts of the US, where many of the social issues are less of an issue. The US has less strict abortion laws than most of Europe, because of less restrictions on later term abortions. But that's mainly due to court decisions rather than public attitudes, which seems to have split nearly no abortion restrictions and near banning abortion with a few exceptions (rape, health of mother).
Anyway, in a more liberal state like Massachusetts, laws and attitudes on social issue are probably not that different from much of Europe. But on economic issues, while states have a large regulatory and budget power, it's still one country. There's less overlap in Europe and the US in labor laws or something like mandatory vacation time. And it's hard for states to implement a universal health care system.
Europe is more "socialist", more corporativist...but many of those "commy" things are fascist in origin. Plus, America is federal, while Europe, more so the new Europe, is Jacobin.

I believe Massachusetts just passed a mandatory sick leave law so a vacation law may not be far behind for it or some other state.
