I'm sure it's out there. I'm sure some find it and stay. I'm sure some find it, make their money, and retire back home. I'm sure some find the grass wasn't really greener, and go back home. I'm sure some find the grass wasn't really greener, and stay because they have no choice. I'm sure some don't care what shade the grass is, because it isn't a bombed out crater of a country.
The more intelligent members of the human race have long realized the American Dream translates to American Nightmare.
Hollywood will always keep the American Dream alive, in many 3rd world countries, with movies. Having traveled widely in Central/South America, and seeing all these pirated DVD stands everywhere, which enables the poor to buy them cheaply, viewing the U.S. through movies, I'm sure many are deceived by them, that we all live the middle class lifestyle up here!
All I'd have to say, down there, is I'm from Las Vegas, and? You've got lots of money!
I work with a number of Asian legal immigrants, and, recently, a Dr. from the Philippines came to our facility, and not being able to pass the medical boards here, is working as an LPN at a nursing home, earning $18 an hour! Now how's he going to achieve the American Dream with that kind of pay?
Wouldn't he have been better off staying in the Philippines?
Tijuana has opened over 10,000 call centers recently, and are employing a number of the deportees returning to Mexico. Starting pay: $150 a week, topping off at $300 a week. One bedroom apartment: $150, for one person being interviewed. Yup! More disposable income for him in Tijuana than the U.S.!
The so-called American Dream will always be open to the sociopathic, knockdown-drag-out workaholics!
European dream: buy a vintage car, drive around the countryside on a sunny summer day, then have a picnic with some nice traditional food products and some nice quality wine, then go to a cute cottage filled with character, enjoy with your family friends
Most europeans aren't really that big on the US to be honest, Americans think the rest of the world cares too much about them, when in reality people outside the US is just as indifferent towards Americans as Americans are indifferent towards anyone else.
I know about Scandinavia, but it's really difficult for immigrants to get to those places.
That's why I was wondering, is the American dream still alive anywhere in the world?
You guys know what I'm talking about.
I was raised to really believe in the American dream. That if I worked hard I should be able to make a respectable life for myself and raise a family. I bought into it.
Now I want to pursue it.
I realize America still has it better than a lot of places. That's not the question.
I realize a lot of people might consider me petulant for not just being happy to live in a 1st world country. I don't think those people can understand without having been raised in my surroundings, so I'm forgiving them ahead of time.
But is there any country a regular guy can move to and still (to this day) be able to pursue this fabled American dream?
Or is it a case of "if you can't make it here you can't make it anywhere?"
Why is this dream only relegated to America? I'm sure working hard and becoming successful is a potential that can be had in most countries.
I know about Scandinavia, but it's really difficult for immigrants to get to those places.
Sweden has a much more lenient immigration system and a higher proportion of foreign-born citizens. They tend to live in better conditions as well.
Anyway, the 'American dream' is such a dumb concept. It's nothing more than an escapist propaganda term for Americans to play up their own country as better than it really is. And I'm not even saying that America is worse. I'm just saying that 'the American dream' is just part of all that American exceptionalism bs, and I'm not about to support that either. It's also a genius propaganda term because you can't disprove it because people all have different definitions for it and will conveniently exclude all the negative aspects of American life when using it. It just means whatever people want it to mean and is an easy way to use logical fallacies to prove America is #1, which is such a stupid concept (as is the concept of any country being '#1'. Everything is so much more complex than that).
It's actually really insulting too because it takes international concepts and assumes they are uniquely American. It is also often used to describe a stereotypical vision of America only idealised by one segment of the American population. A lot of people use it just enforce suburban control over everyone via it's image being forced through the media. So yeah, the American dream doesn't really exist outside of people's heads.
