Something I've been wondering about for a while now but not really sure the answer.
Why is the crime rate in Latin America generally much higher than Asia for countries at roughly the same level of development particularly for violent crimes such as murder. For example if we compare Thailand vs. Brazil, it seems much more likely a person will get mugged or even killed walking around randomly on the streets of Rio vs. Bangkok. Even very poor countries like Cambodia and Bhutan there seems to be not much violent crime compared to somewhere like Honduras. So any ideas why?
Which doesn't explain Pol Pot... or Mao or Kim Il-Sung or Hirohito for that matter.
You can cherry pick individual examples and identify outliers everywhere no doubt - i'm talking about the people as a whole. Unless of course your conclusion is that everyone in Cambodia is like Pol Pot, everyone in China is like Mao, everyone in North Korea is like Kim Il Sung or everyone in Japan is like Hirohito...

No, of course not. But the assumption that Asians are all peaceful and gentle is equally incorrect.
