The answers you need will come from the Passport office of the United States of America and the equivalent office in Singapore.
Those two office are the only place to get this information that will be correct and complete.
In every day conversation, we don't use that word. In literature and songs, yes. Among other words we wouldn't normally use.
Although having said that, I'm a born and raised American and I frequently use the word "daft" where as most Americans don't. At least none I know.

Since Singapore does not allow multiple citizenship, the only way is to get Permanent Residence(PR), aka blue card in Singapore and green card in the US.
