I'd say Phoenix.

As for the poll, I can't imagine any city anywhere in the world to be like L.A., only somewhere in OZ or NZ perhaps, and only because of the car culture city design of some of their cities.

Bay Area in some ways, in the built form and demographics. Though obviously most of San Francisco is rather different.

I'd say most of Greater LA is more like Phoenix: not the LA of movies, postcards (e.g. Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Santa Monica, Venice), while those other parts are more like San Diego. But San Diego is most like the quieter parts of LA, like Torrance, Redondo (well less well-known I should say), as well as Orange County.

Parts of the East Bay and San Jose, Oakland in California are other ones I missed out. Of course cities like Sacramento, Fresno naturally have similarities. Vegas in parts too.

From my travel experiences, Mexico City felt the most LA. The smog, the traffic, the mountains surrounding the city just screams Los Angeles. Also the fact that LA has the highest Mexican population for any US city makes it feel like your in Mexico. They are both the entertainment capital of their respected countries - Hollywood (movies) in LA and Televisa (telenovelas/soap operas) in Mexico City.

Sao Paulo due to the diversity of people, how it is sprawled out, and the contrast between rich and poor.

No not at all. Sydney and LA have next to nothing in common, other than the beach culture. Sydney's geography is completely different to Los Angeles. LA is hilly, then mountainous, while Sydney is generally flat and only slightly hilly in some areas, and even then, its very little. Sydney's inner city is situated on and divided by a harbour, while LA's downtown is almost central rather than coastal, with suburbs that spring around and outwards. LA has been modernised, while Sydney's downtown has retained a lot of its European history.

Just to put it in perspective in the most simple way, here are two maps:

SYDNEY (the city centre is the yellow pointer):
