Mexico CIty is a bizarre comparison for LA, I don't see how they have much in common at all. LA has a reputation for wealth and fame, CDMX is notoriously gritty. LA has the beach culture, CDMX is inland. CDMX is incredibly historic and dates back to nearly a thousand years, LA is a typical sprawling New World city with very little history
Before it was ravaged by the drug war, Acapulco probably would've been the best comparison for LA

I think its because of the smog, skyline, surrounding mountains, and the Mexican population. LA has some gritty areas as well. The movie "Elysium" which is set in future Los Angeles was filmed in Mexico City.

I am surprised that lots of European cities such as London, Paris Amsterdam, Brussels, Madrid, Moscow, Frankfurt, Prague and Budapest when the city in Europe I would probably compare to LA is Barcelona with it's beaches, climate, vast sporting stadia, skyscrapers etc.
The South of France and Monaco is probably quite similar in relation to some aspects of California, it has nice weather, good beaches, is a wine growing areas and is home to the famous Cannes Film Festival.
In terms of Bombay it's now known as Mumbai, the name was changed in 1995.
In terms of the US itself, the main comparison outside of California is probably with Miami.
Whilst the most similar English speaking city to LA and California outside of the US is without doubt Sydney and the Gold Coast.

Absolutely not! If there is any US city that must be compared to LA, maybe Phoenix even though it's not coastal. Miami and Los Angeles are world's apart.
Yeah, LA has mountains and a more scenic coast line. I agree they are very different but I do feel there are some similarities between certain residential areas in LA and Miami. One story bungalows, spanish tiles, Palm trees, Spanish signs in business fronts. etc etc.
