My sister's boyfriend come from the Réunion, since the recent attack, his family are totally traumatized. So, no Réunion Island. That's really sad because it's a nice place (so my sister said...)
My 2 cents.

Lots of sharks in the Carib, but very few bothering anyone who isn't diving with them.

The kid in Réunion was in a forbidden area, he shouldn't have been there so you're right. I don't know how his parents are feeling right now, but well... that's still sad.

What about the Atlantic coast in France / Spain / Portugal ?

Lots of surf there and no sharks to be seen.

Yikes..I just looked that up. It seems warmer ocean temps are bringing them northward.

I have no idea. The only body of water I personnaly know in France is the North Sea where my father is living and I don't really recommand it... I've been to La Rochelle/Royan a while ago, so maybe there.. ?

Normandy is quite a bit colder than the rest.

The southwestern coast is famous for surfing, up to Royan infact, and I've seen lots of surfers in Bretagne in trespass bay as well.

A bit colder, yes. But well, some people may like colder water, I don't know.
Never been in Bretagne, that's too far away from where I live.
And I've just been to Royan once, there were lots of people but no surfers. Wasn't there the good day maybe ? I'd like to see a person surfing.
