California is great, but c'mon, Italy is probably the most beautiful country on earth. Italy in a landslide.

It would be helpful if people could elaborate on their choices a little more.

I don't know California at all, so I will not vote in this poll. Anyway, I can show some good natural scenery here in Italy.

So that I don't have much time, I will just put the first places I can think of.

The Alps:
-Dolomiti: https://www.google.it/search?q=foto+...YQwNjqbFiuM%3A
-Aosta Valley https://www.google.it/search?q=monta...HjRpFpwErtM%3A

The Apennines:
-Marmore's Falls https://www.google.it/search?q=casca...REhJ_Mz9mXM%3A

Hills
-Langhe-Roero-Monferrato https://www.google.it/search?q=langh...sC3IxtgCn1M%3A
-Chianti (Tuscany countryside) https://www.google.it/search?q=chian...Zfn0EF89uxM%3A

Lakes:
-Lago Maggiore (and the other pre-alpine lakes) https://www.google.it/search?q=migli...NUV_xmGXMlM%3A

Volcanoes:
-Etna: https://www.google.it/search?q=etna&...2O4r4sDAhAM%3A

Coast:
-Cinque Terre https://www.google.it/search?q=cinqu...saggio&imgrc=_

Italy has great scenery overall, although where I live it pretty much looks like the US midwest and the beaches in the north adriatic part are pretty godawful.

Also, there are some suburban areas that don't look too good, but they look better here than in France, mainly because buildings are red / orange whereas in France it's mostly grey.

Some industrial areas (there has to be) and a lot of pollution in some beautiful areas, and of course the influence of Mafia / Camorra in the south, which has left ugly traces on the landscape like unfinished highways and stuff like that.

Overall it looks great though, and people don't really realize it here, I think.

Then there are those odd looking pines that are not conical and are practically unique to Italy, I love those!!!!

Italy is simply better as far as natural scenery is concerned.
But Italy doesn't have the Sierras, or Cascades or Trinity Alps

True that Italy probably has more consistent beauty as California's Central Valley is basically Kansas on the west coast. California's deserts are extremely barren (the high desert not as much), not the stark beauty that Arizona's deserts have.

As far as pines, I'm sure CA has plenty of unique ones as CA has more species of pine than any other region in the world.

Don't you think the Sierra Nevada range of California is fantastic as well?

Only the eastern areas of Southern California would be dry enough to actually be considered desert; much of Southern California falls under the Med climate regime, although a drier version of the regime than that which occurs in the Med Basin.

The beaches of California look the exact same as those on the Med; the only thing that could possibly make the beaches of Italy better is probably the warmer water, but that's is. Both Italy and California beaches have similar sand and water color.

You have forests of redwoods in CA, the tallest trees on the planet, quite unique to California. You won't be seeing any of that in Italy.
People have this idea that California is mostly desert. Only 25-30% of California is true desert.

I think most of the people commenting here haven't traveled to most parts of California, especially the natural habitats.

I don't have enough criteria to compare (only been to Rome), but California has many spectacular places: Lake Tahoe, Big Sur, Yosemite, Anza Borrego dessert, and many more.
