For those from “new world’’ settler countries founded by immigration, who are some the more significant indigenous artists who have become part of mainstream culture? I’m thinking of artists who sing in their native language, or who’s songs or artwork speak largely of issues from an indigenous perspective.
Here in Australia, most folk who enjoy music would have listened to Gurrumul Yunupingu.
Archie Roach is another well known indigenous singer. Some of his work speaks to universal themes, but most is more focussed on Aboriginal issues and perspectives.
Here is Elisapie Isaac. She is a Canadian Inuit singer. The Inuit used to be know to most of the world as "Eskimos". Elisapie is from extreme northern Quebec which includes some of the Inuit ancestral territory. She sings in Inuktitut (this song), French and English.
This goes back a few decades but this is probably the most successful truly aboriginal act in Canadian history: Kashtin. They are from what is known as the "north shore" of Quebec, in far eastern Quebec. Where the St. Lawrence River/Gulf meets the Atlantic Ocean. They are from the "Innu" people, also known as "Montagnais". They actually had a lot mainstream success on Quebec's francophone radio stations, and many non-aboriginal people in Quebec today can actually hum along to these songs and may even have bought their album. They are not very well-known in "Anglo-Canada" (Canada outside Quebec), except for some aboriginal communities there where people may have paid attention to what was a rare example of aboriginal pop music with mainstream success (in spite of not having any culture and language in common with Kashtin). It was quite catchy stuff. My wife and I bought the album.
I don' really think the indigenous artist concept is really one that exists in NZ.
Some Maori artists might highlight cultural aspects in their work, but that's normal main stream stuff anyway.
