one of the reasons so many people died in france during the 03 heatwave was because of a 35 hr workweek?

The reason so many people died is because the heat-wave was such a freak weather occurrence that nobody was prepared for it.

We don't use air conditioning in Europe as heatwaves are virtually non existent and people have always coped without it.

The people who died were sadly elderly people in old people's homes and who were very vulnerable to this kind of freak weather conditions.

Because it occurred in the middle of the summer most doctors and nurses were on holiday ( which they take then as MOST French people take their holidays in July and August, it makes more sense) and therefore emergency services were more limited in capacity.

To put in perspective the heatwave deaths in Chicago in 1993 where 739 people died in a Nation where air conditioning is standard and people work 90 hour weeks seems pretty bad.

The French as you put them !!!!!

The French!!! will for me always be the people who stitched up my 20 year old American kid for free one summer when he appeared at a health clinic in Nice with a torn up, bloody finger.

Yes.
Back in August '98 we were traveling through Scotland and everyone was talking about "the heatwave." It was something like 80 Farenheit, and our b@b host in Stirling was fanning herself because of the "heat." She and her husband were not used to it being much hotter than 70-something. I remember thinking about this when we flew back to Denver where it was in the upper 90's.

Exactly - you have to realise that in pretty temperate climates where there are rarely extremes of weather, conditions that seem minor in one place can cause chaos in others. Look at the UK - 2 inches of snow and everything south of Edinburgh virtually grinds to a halt.

You can't diss a whole country for not being prepared for abnormal conditions, it would be a complete waste of money to spend thousands on equipment that might never get used.

one reason I bring it up, is they are predicting that this will become far more common over the next few decades.

Now that's the kind of healthcare I could use! A coworker tore up her finger at work last week and she went to an Urgi-Clinic to get stitches. It's gonna cost my employer's comprehension $120!!!

France, je te manque!

This thread is not a discussion about the French health system or the movie SICKO.

Members who wish to discuss either of those topics are asked to use the Search feature to locate any of several previous threads on those topics.

Thanks.
