I lived in Croatia for 2 years during the Tudjman era. Zagreb was a great, if not recovering, city. I LOVED driving to the coast and spending time on the islands. Other European countries were also (and still are) really close. One Sunday, I woke up bored and around 3:00 a friend and I decided to take a road trip, with a different part of dinner in different countries. Slovenia (appetizers), Austria (dinner), Italy (desert). We were home by midnight.
You have a beautiful country!

I like the flag of Croatia. If there were 200 other flags out on a field all close together, it would be hard to tell one from the other. Except I'll bet I could pick out the red and white checkerboard flag of Croatia!
If I watch an international Football (soccer in the US) game, I can always spot the team from Croatia real quick too, the guys in red and white checker shirts! A very good team too, especially considering you have done well against Germany, England and Spain that are loaded with pro stars.

In Istanbul, I saw tons of commercials on TV for tourism to Croatia. Must be a popular destinations for Turks. I also met a nice Croatian girl there, and one of my good friends was a Serbian man named Zoran. He told me that Croatian and Serbian are bascially the same language, but are officially seperate languages for political reasons.

We visited the Dalmatian coast in the summer of '06.
Gorgeous blue Adriatic, beautiful fields of lavender on Hvar, interesting historic architecture, and very friendly people.
Some photos:

I'll be visiting Dubrovnik in May. I can't wait. I don't know much about Croatia, but the pictures of your country are so beautiful.

I have been to Croatia countless times as my family hails from there. My family is from the Slavonia region, where there are many vineyards and beautiful natural reserves. Kopacki Rit was declared a wetland of international importance thanks to the devotion of one of my local family members. I also have relatives living in Split, and spent several vacations in the Trogir/Ciovo area.
We are planning to return this summer and plan to see the Blue Grotto - Modra Spilja - on Bisevo Island, which will be a new experience, and also will return to Sibenik and Krka Falls. Last trip we also visited Hvar, where the oldest still-functioning theater in Europe is located (and so pretty), Bol on island Brac, Dubrovnik, etc. Dubrovnik was already too touristy for me. I much prefer wandering the streets of Trogir. My favorite island was Mali Drvenik, with its seagrass beaches and crystal clear water, it was the most breathtakingly beautiful (and seemingly untouched) natural scenery I have ever had the privilege of seeing, and by far the most comfortable beaches I have ever experienced.
If there is any other coastal location you can recommend (not planning to visit Istria or Makarska areas) please let me know!
